Summer Solstice Celebration – Wianki

photo99Teaching your child your mother tongue might be an exceptional and unforgettable experience if you introduce the exotic elements of old traditions and customs celebrated in your home country.

“Wianki”, it’s an old Polish Midsummer festival, still celebrated  in a variety of ways, including the traditional wreath floating in the river.

After we’d celebrated Father’s Day, we didn’t have much time to prepare next big project, so we kept it very simple, but it was still very enjoyable.

Goal: learn that summer solstice day has the longest period of daylight

Time: 60 minutes

Here’s what we did:

We talked about the beginning of the summer and the meaning of summer solstice and the way we would celebrate it: we would pick some flowers, make a wreath and let it float in the water in the lake. We also talked about summer and vacation in general. We had this conversation during a long and very pleasant walk.

Vocabulary in focus:

New vocabulary: wianek, puszczać wianki, przesilenie letnie, pleść, polne kwiaty, siać, zwiędłe kwiaty (wreath, float wreath, summer solstice, weave, wildflowers, to sow, withered flowers)

Reviewed vocabulary: zbierać kwiaty, wakacje, wyjechać, czerwiec, lipiec, sierpień, podróżować, ładna pogoda ciepło, zimno (pick flowers, summer holidays, go away, June, July, August, to travel, nice weather, warm, cold)

It was a very nice and relaxing activity 🙂 .
